Happy New Year, Oak Park!

Mary and Pete Mantei and I met with Colleen Paveglio from the City in December. Our agenda included:

Neighborhood Priorities: What are the top priorities in relation to the City within your neighborhood?

Increased Communications: Where do you suggest communication can be increased to benefit the residents in your neighborhood/City? Where do you view communication “blind spots” between the City and the residents?

Future Endeavors: Website Overhaul, Digital Newsletter and Text Alerts

Very productive meeting.

If you’d like to weigh in on the above, please add your ideas/comments/suggestions HERE.

We’ll have another meeting with Coleen this spring.

Should we plan a winter get-together for the neighborhood in February? If you would like to help plan it, email me at oakpark.tcmi@gmail.com.

In case you missed it, Colleen and the City just published their 2021 annual report. It’s impressive. Check it out HERE.

Mary and Pete also helped kick off our Humans of Oak Park storytelling series. See below. Who’s next? Email me at oakpark.tcmi@gmail.com

Stay awesome and happy winter, Oak Park.

“In 2013, my husband Peter and I sold a log home on an isolated 10 acres in the Upper Peninsula and changed our zip code in a big way; we moved to Traverse City.

We wanted to live in a downtown neighborhood which would enable us to walk or bike to most things we wanted or needed to do.

How we came to be in the Oak Park Neighborhood is simple; there was a house available, which we could afford, on lovely Washington Street.

Available homes at that time in a downtown neighborhood in Traverse City fit into the “slim and none” category, much like today.

Nine years later, I think the more relevant story is why we’ve stayed. We have made friends of all ages, from playful preschoolers to unique individuals who best us by ten plus years.

The young families are energizing and it’s so much fun to watch the kids grow and develop.

We have found people we can depend on to celebrate with us or to support us when we need it.

We’ve met people who teach us new things about the area and its history and beyond, and people who will pick up our mail when we are away. There is a lot of reciprocity in our neighborhood, and that makes us better people.

I remember my Dad saying, “The people make the party.”

That pretty much sums up why we choose to be Oak Park Neighbors.”
